MARION INVITATIONAL

Boys Race

Western finished second overall behind Guerin Catholic in the 26-team Gold Division for schools under 1,000 in the invite.
Wawasee’s Zach Cockrill was the first-place overall finisher with a time of 16:28.

Riley Carter finished ninth overall, crossing the line right at 17:00 for the Panthers. Josh Everetts took 12th place in a time of 17:11.

We dropped our cumulative time by 4 1/2 minutes from a week ago,” Western coach Gary Jewell said. “Riley ran most of the race in the lead pack of eight or nine guys, and Josh was right behind that lead pack.

Caleb Maddox and Auston Davenport finished within a hair of each other. Maddox took 21st place with a time of 17:41 while Davenport was 22nd at 17:42. Josh Scott was 41st with a time of 18:08.

Those three ran together basically through the first two miles of the race,” Jewell said. “Josh was two minutes faster than he was a week ago. He was a big key to us finishing second.

Eastern finished 16th out of 26 teams in the Gold division.

“All five guys set PRs, which was really exciting,” Comet coach Ben Cox said. “Brenton [Cherry] started off a little slower at first, but he picked it up and finished strong.”

Cherry had the top Comet finish, placing 53rd overall at 18:25. Evan Hursh was 90th with a time 19:17, and Aaron Schaaf finished just behind him in 95th place with a time of 19:21. Matt Kerner (119th, 19:47) and Josh Reprogle (136th, 20:10) rounded out Eastern’s top five.

Northwestern placed 20th overall in the event. The Tigers' top five were: Josh Perry (72nd, 18:46); Spencer Hutchins (104th, 19:31); Corey Menning (111th, 19:39); Jake Duranto (121st, 19:49) and Taylor McLain (127th, 19:58).

Maconaquah took 21st in the Gold Division. Adam Rood led the Braves with a 57th-place finish in 18:29, followed by Quinn Reinhardt in 71st (18:44).

In the Purple Division, Kokomo finished 18th out of 26 teams. The Kats' top five runners were Ethan Sharp (26th, 16:28), Colten Pearce (18:05), Justin Taflinger (18:09), Jadyn Whitehead (16:33) and Logan Hawk (18:35).

"In 90 percent humidity, the Kat harriers cut 78 seconds off their team time," coach Ricke Stucker said.

Girls Race

Nicole Hampshire broke Western’s school record that she set last year with a fifth-place time of 19:48 as the Panther girls team placed eighth overall in the Gold Division at the Marion Cross Country Invitational on Saturday. The Gold Division featured schools with enrollments of 1,000 and under.

Oak Hill finished first out of 26 teams in the division, with Guerin Catholic’s Rachel Yuska taking the top overall time at 19:04. Hampshire's previous school record was 19:53.

Nicole is your dream girl to coach,” Western coach Joni McCracken said. “Assistant coach Ray Tetrault has really taken her under his wing. She’s a very strong and confident runner.

Western's other top runners were: Taylor Walden (50th place, 21:47); Allison McMinn (57th, 22:00); Logan Buck (63rd, 22:12) and Cora Johnson (80th, 22:42).

It’s definitely a fast course, but the girls have to be able to step up in that kind of situation,” McCracken said. “We’re in a great position here in the middle of the season. We had five out of nine girls PR.

Maconaquah was seventh out of 28 teams in the Gold Division. Olivia Winegardner led the Braves with a school-record time of 20:04 to take eighth in the 208-runner field. She was followed by Kate White, who tied the former record in 20:16 to take 16th. Madison Winegardner was 42nd (21:29), Haley Wimmer was 58th (22:07) and Amanda Shinn was 79th (22:49).

"[It] was a great day for our team," Mac coach Charlie Hubler said.

"This is a fast course, but it was extremely wet from [Friday] night's storms. Our girls stepped up and several of them ran personal bests."

Eastern finished 17th overall. Carly Jones was the top Comet finisher, taking 12th place with a time of 20:06. Avery Ewing followed her in 23rd place with a time of 20:39.

“We were excited to run,” Eastern coach Ben Cox said. “Avery and Carly both finishing in the top-25 and getting medals was great. Three girls ran season bests, and another ran a PR.”

Sydnie Hill was 114th at 23:46. Elyssa DeAngulo finished 117th at 26:38 and Kaitlin Adair was 196th at 28:39.

Jones, Ewing and DeAngulo ran season bests, while Adair ran a PR.

Northwestern finished 23rd. The Tigers' top five runners were: Jensen Freeman (86th, 22:50); Nicole Crocker (107th, 23:27); Rachel Johns (128th, 24:24); Kate Bilkey (130th, 24:30); Elizabeth Bolyard (135th, 24:41).

Kokomo's lone runner was Cinnamon Andrews, who finished in 23:06.8 to take 121st out of 182 runners in the Purple Division (large schools).

"She had a decent performance considering it was her first time out [this season]," Kokomo coach Dave Barnes said.
