WWestern finished second in the 16-team invitational in Veedersburg. McCutcheon took first with 41 points, while the Panthers took second at 62. Perry Meridian (80), Angola (86) and Greencastle (115) rounded out top five.

Western junior Matt Grider finished second overall in 16:57, finishing behind Perry Meridian's Isaiah White, who won the race in 16:50.

Junior Jacob Bradshaw (seventh, 17:55) and senior Riley Worl (9th, 18:03) added top-10 finishes for the Panthers. Sophomore Riley Carter (21st, 19:10) and junior Austin Elliott (23rd, 19:15 rounded out the top five for the Panthers, while junior Cesar Terron (37th, 19:59) and sophomore Caleb Maddox (40th, 20:04) also competed for the Panthers.

"We looked good for our first meet of the year," Western coach Gary Jewel said. "The [FC] course, looking back, is probably 43 seconds slower than our course. I like to compare times like that to get ready for the [Western] Invite next week, and very low 16-[minute mark] is a very good [potential] time for Matt. Carter ran a personal best on a slower course, so I'm thrilled with that. We're looking forward to seeing what we can do at the Northwestern Combo on Wednesday."
