Boys MeetWestern took third overall out of 17 teams with 107 points, behind champion Logansport, who won with 52, and third-place Huntington North (60). Kokomo was sixth. Huntington North's Cordell Lewis won the race in 17:08. Matt Grider led the Panthers with a fourth-place finish in 17:39, and Jacob Bradshaw followed closely behind in sixth place in 17:48. Austin Elliott (30th, 18:42), Braxton Bagwell (33rd, 18:46) and Auston Davenport (43rd, 19:04) rounded out Western's lineup. "The conditions were abysmal, and I told the guys to not overdo it because we have coming up," Western coach Gary Jewell said, "and we don't want to jeopardize winning a championship at any level because of a meet run in a quagmire." Kokomo took sixth with 206 points, led by Brent Noll's 16th-place showing in 18:05. Waylon Coulter took 39th for the Wildkats in 18:57, while Matt Scharenbroch (41st, 18:58), Jordan Fivecoat (60th, 19:52) and Blake Brookshire (72nd, 20:33) complete Kokomo's lineup. Northwestern finished in eighth place with 232 points. Zach Duranto led the Tigers in 29th place at 18:41, and was followed by Charlie Neher (35th, 18:54), Bradley Jakes (54th, 19:39), Shad Jakes (62nd, 19:55) and Tyler Barnes (77th, 20:45). "The guys ran well consider the conditions," Northwestern coach Dave Stevens. We continue to improve as we've done all season long. I'm very happy with the performances [Tuesday], and we're still looking forward to the MIC [next] Tuesday and the sectional in two weeks. Andrew Fackler won the junior varsity race for Northwestern in 18:41. Girls raceWestern took fifth place out of 15 teams in Tuesday's soggy race with 159 points. Hunting-ton North won with 42 points, while the host Berries (113) and Twin Lakes (121) rounded out the top three. Hamilton Heights' Sydney Chapman won the race in a time of 20:11 Krissy Durr led the Panthers with a 10th-place finish in 22:05. Cara Love took 20th in 22:29. Emma Nixon was 38th in 23:23, Nicole Hampshire took 40th in 23:30, and Gina Jakubowicz rounded out the lineup in 59th at 24:24. "This was the first time we've had a full team run in a few weeks, and it was nice having a full team on the course. They were able to use one another," Western coach Joni McCracken said. "The energy they felt being together as a team for the first time in a while helped them place as well as they did in this meet." Northwestern took 10th place while running without three of its top five, and Kokomo ran with an incomplete team. Heidi Freeman led the Tigers in 23rd place in 22:41, and was followed by Olivia Price (37th, 23:24), Elise Cobb (62nd, 24:32), Rachel Johns (63rd, 24:33) and Megan Bunch (68th, 24:37). "Three of our top five runners were out, two with the flu and another with an injury," Northwestern coach Dave Stevens said. "The ladies that did run did a good job, and ran as hard as they could. I'm very proud of them." Kierra Branson led Kokomo in 52nd place at 24:04, and was followed by Erica Goodman (88th, 26:17), Alyson Rohlfing (97th, 27:41) and Hannah Reecer (104th, 29:09). |
