Western took fifth in the event. Angola won with a score of 27, followed by Perry Meridian (43), Greencastle (62), McCutcheon (86). Western's 164 rounded out the top 5.

For the Panthers, Cara Love was 15th with a time of 23:22, Gina Jakubowicz was 23rd in 23:53, Nicole Hampshire was 44th in 26:27, Olivia Nixon was 50th in 26:47, and Katie Singer as 53rd in 26:59.

"We only had five kids running. We had a couple of our top runners that are out right now," Western coach Joni McCracken said. "That course is always a great course to start out with. It's a tough course, but they responded very well to it, and we feel we're at a great starting point.

"For the top two girls [Saturday] gina and Cara both have improved thier times tremendously from last year at this same point in the season."

Erick Rinehart of Angola set a the pace with a course-record 19:43.
