Western’s boys cross country team came out on top of a five-team meet it hosted on Tuesday at Oakbrook Valley Park. Western posted a score of 35 to claim the top spot. Marion (56), Kokomo (64), Wabash (74) and Tipton (144) rounded out the field. Western’s top five runners were: Chris Love (second place, 18:04); Matt Grider (fourth, 18:14); Christopher Nunan (seventh, 18:28); Braxton Bagwell (ninth, 18:39); and Kyle Starich (13th, 19:17). “Coming off of last weekend where we ran really well [in the New Prairie Invitational], I thought we ran OK,” Western coach Gary Jewell said. “Obviously, it’s one of those middle-of-the-week meets where you have another big invitational coming on Saturday. We’re going to Culver [Academies], which is where our regional is at, and we’re going to see some big competition there and we want to do well at the meet.” Jewell noted many of the runners approached the meet more as “a workout more than a race,” adding that showed in the runners’ times. Kokomo’s Adrian Glover (18:03) edged Western’s Love by a second for the top spot. Other Kokomo runners included: Dylan Walker (eighth, 18:34); Brent Noll (10th, 18:55); Waylon Coulter (23rd, 20:11) and Matt Scharenbroch (24th, 20:17). Kokomo will join Western in the Culver meet on Saturday. |
