Panthers sweep CC meets

Western's boys and girls cross country teams turned in sharp performances in winning five-team meets Tuesday night at Tipton.

In the boys race, Austin Young and Chris Love finished 1-2 to lead Western to a strong score of 34. Kokomo followed with a score of 49. Marion (56), Wabash (100) and Tipton (133) rounded out the field.

Young covered the course in 16:47 and Love followed in 17:09. Also for the Panthers, John Capps finished sixth in 17:56 and Ben Bradshaw (18:19) and Braxton Bagwell (18:25) finished 12th and 13th, respectively.

"Austin ran well - he pretty much led the entire race. It was a nice, easy race for him," Western coach Gary Jewell said.

Jewell noted Love, Bradshaw, Bagwell and Brice Sheets all turned in personal-best times.

"We did a nice job of going out and establishing a conservative pace early on and that kind of helped us as the meet went on," he said. "Chris Love went out very conservatively, 5:28 for his first mile. 17:08 is just a tick over a 5:30 pace for the entire race so I'm very pleased with that and I know he is as well."

Adrian Glover led Kokomo, finishing fourth in 17:35. Mitchell Lively led the host Blue Devils, coming in 23rd in 19:12.

In the girls race, Western grabbed five of the top 13 individual sports, posting a score of 33 to run away with first place. Marion followed with a score of 55. Tipton (74), Kokomo (96) and Wabash (101) rounded out the five-team field.

The Panthers' top five runners were Corianne Myer (third place, 21:54); Kayla Gaskins (fourth. 22:11): Krissy Dun (fifth, 22:17t: Bre Nicholas (eighth, 22:42); and Erin Weber (13th, 23:26).

"From top to bottom, I thought the girls ran real strong," Western coach Bo Britton said. "We had that , nice pack up front again. I thought they ran a very smart race - just kept working their way up through the pack Corianne and Kayla each had one of her best races of the year and our sixth person, Gina Jakubowicz, had another [personal best]. I thought they all did a really good job."

Tipton's Eroica Stackhouse won the race in 21:23. Kellie Miles led Kokomo with a second-place finish in 21:28.
